"Black Pioneers: The Untold Story" by William Loren Katz
During the 1800s Americans of many ethnicities migrated West into the Ohio and Mississippi valleys. Among them were many African-Americans who were seeking a better life away from the laws limiting their freedoms in the more settled Eastern and Southern United States. Some people set up their own homesteads and communities, while others joined the many Native Nations in the area.
"Black Pioneers" details the history of these travelers, including historical figures such as Dred Scott, Sara Jane Woodson, and Peter Clark.
